Automatic-Transmission Information and Maintenance

Shift Conditions
Automatic-transmission problems, which should be addressed immediately, can cause unusual conditions when shifting your vehicle. These include:
  • Delays in engagement - Any delay greater than two seconds when you select “Drive” or “Reverse,” occurring before the transmission applies engine torque to the wheels.
  • Missing shifts - Failure of the transmission to engage in any gear (e.g. missing first gear or overdrive).
  • Harsh shifts - A slamming or very abrupt shift that can be damaging to the transmission and other vehicle components.
  • Neutralizing - Marked by the vehicle suddenly reacting as if you moved the shift selection to the “Neutral” position.
